_ 2017 Memorial Hermann IRONMAN North American Championship Texas:
Just 27 miles north of Houston, The Woodlands is the perfect venue to host the IRONMAN North American Championship. The Woodlands is one of America’s first master-planned communities, is close to two major airports, numerous parks, and a bustling downtown for athletes and their families to enjoy. With plenty of amenities within walking distance, this pedestrian-friendly community makes it easy for visitors to find their way around town during race week.
Athletes will begin with a 2.4-mile swim in Lake Woodlands. The rolling start, point-to-point swim begins at North Shore Park and ends at South Shore Park. The two-loop, out and back 112-mile bike course takes participants south through the scenic, rolling farmland of east Texas. The day ends with a 26.2-mile run taking place entirely within The Woodlands and concluding with a spectacular finish on Waterway Ave.
The point-to-point swim takes place in Lake Woodlands. Athletes will enter the water at North Shore Park and swim toward South Shore Park. After reaching the turn-around buoy, athletes will head back toward North Shore Park, turn slightly right and swim down the Lake Woodlands waterway system before finishing at Town Green Park, which will serve as the transition area.
The swim will be a rolling start. Athletes will enter the water in a continuous stream through a controlled access point, similar to how running road races are started. An athlete’s times will start when they cross timing mats under the swim arch. Athletes will be directed to self-seed on race morning based on their projected swim time. Volunteers and staff will be in the staging area with signs and will assist with this process. Self-seeding will not be mandatory but will be encouraged.
Age Group Athletes will begin to enter the water at 6:40 a.m. It is expected to take 25-30 minutes for all athletes to enter the water; everyone will be in the water by 7:10 a.m.
*Athletes who choose to wear a wetsuit in water temperatures between 76.1 degrees Fahrenheit (24.5 degrees Celsius) and 83.8 degrees Fahrenheit (28.8 degrees Celsius) will not be eligible for Age Group awards, including IRONMAN World Championship slots or Rolldown slots.
Athletes will start their 112 mile journey by navigating part of The Woodlands, then enter into Northern Harris County. Once in Harris County, athletes will navigate two loops on the Hardy Toll Road. Do not worry about the tolls; we have you covered! The majority of the course is closed to traffic and should make for a fast, flat course due to the minimal elevation. *Map last updated 7/19/2016.
The run course takes place entirely within The Woodlands and concludes with a spectacular finish on Waterway Ave.
