WILL YOU JOIN US in raising awareness about human trafficking? Your donation/fundraising will provide the 5k necessities (water, medical kits, race bibs & race timing system.) The surplus will go towards the River South Center’s greater goals of creating safe places and points of connection in our community.
Last year’s race allowed us to do, as you might imagine, the practical things – like pay for insurance, join the Quincy Chamber of Commerce and obtain an accountant to help us make sure that all of our paperwork is filed properly! Being able to make these connections in our community has been an exciting and valuable experience. But even more exciting than the practical, we have been able to set money aside towards our larger goals of creating safe spaces for at-risk people. Towards those ends, a coffee shop committee has begun looking into what it would take to make that a successful endeavor.
We’ve also been able to continue offering things like the monthly Community Exercise Group and River Film Forum, the Weekly Playgroup, and Spring into Reading. Additionally, we were able to help bring the UN Gift Box to the New England area. In that endeavor, 4,551 people walked through the 10x10 work of art, reading stories of local survivors of human trafficking and signing petitions to pass better laws here in Massachusetts to protect trafficked persons.
And just beyond all of that, there is a Trafficking Summit being planned for Saturday, May 21, 2016 which will include trafficking survivors and panels of professionals working in the field to combat human trafficking. We are also looking into obtaining space to build a Community Garden. One of our hopes with that garden would be that there would be space reserved to help those affected by human trafficking.
And while we have you, just to say, if there are things that you would like to offer, we would be interested in hearing from you. The Center exists to be a catalyst of hope and joy in the community and to be the ones to use our talents and resources to make a difference in the world. So if you’d like to run a program or join the justice task force, please email [email protected]!
HOW TO PARTICIPATE:
1. Complete your registration for race day by clicking "Join the Team." The first 100 registrants will receive a SOBO Project water bottle. (Race will be timed using RFID chips. Access to race times will be available almost immediately for those who are interested.)
2. Ask people to sponsor you. We are asking that each person raise a minimum of $25. This allows us to cover the costs of the event and continue our work towards creating safe places for at-risk people, including a drop-in center for trafficking victims and partnering in creating aftercare facilities so that we can add to the number of people who can call themselves survivors.
One simple email, a few clicks on your social media pages, and suddenly, you are part of making a difference. The numbers and statistics surrounding human trafficking are disturbing. But there is good news. Many believe that if we get enough people involved, we will be able to see Human Trafficking end in our lifetime. We at the River South Center agree. Let's do this thing!
3. Show up on Race Day!
ABOUT US: The SOBO Project (See the One. Be the One.) was created to raise awareness about human trafficking, to create safe places to be for people at risk, and to partner with others in developing places for people to recover, heal, and find empowerment after having gone through the trauma of being a victim of trafficking.
