2013 Orange County Kids Triathlon:

  • Whether your child is new to the sport and wants to give it a try or they are more experienced this is sure to be a great event.
  • The course is great for beginners and provides a competitive sprint course for the more experienced.
  • It has been designed to allow visibility and easy access for friends and family to cheer on athletes.
  • Since the swimming portion of this event will take place in an Olympic size pool, this will be a Reverse Triathlon - running, cycling, swimming (in this order).

  • This is a reverse triathlon.
  • We are offering 4 different courses and 5 age group brackets ranging in age from 4 yrs - 15 yrs.
  • All participants who register will receive a t-shirt and medal.

Course Information:


Junior Triathlon Overview
  
Run: 1 mile --> Bike: 2 miles --> Swim: 200 yards
The Junior Triathlon will have an combined start time for the two age groups (10-12 yrs & 13-15 yrs). Course will follow a Reverse Triathlon format. The race will begin with a brief course overview inside the Transition Area at approximately 8:45am.

Run

The race starts with the run and will begin on the CMHS track. Our Junior Triathletes will circle the track completing one (1) full lap and continue another half lap before enter the grass section which will be clearly marked. Runners will then continue on the blacktop for the final section of this run course which will lead them to the Transition Area.

Bike

The bike route will lead cyclists from the CMHS blacktop to the adjacent Jack Hammet Sports Complex "L" shaped parking lot which participants will circle one (1) time and return to the CMHS blacktop where they will complete their first lap before returning to the Jack Hammet Sports Complex parking lot for their second lap. Cyclists will complete two (2) laps before returning to the Transition Area. 

Swim

The swim will take place in the Costa Mesa Aquatics Center olympic length swimming pool where athletes will enter via steps at one end and swim four (4) lengths of the pool, rounding a total of three (3) buoys placed at the far ends. Swimmers will exit the pool via a ladder followed by a quick turn on the pool deck where participants will be greeted by our volunteers at the finish line.

Transition Area & Set up

The race will have one transition area. Transition area for the Junior Tri will be open for set-up between 7:30am - 8:30am.
 
Big Kids Triathlon Overview   
Run: 1/2 mile --> Bike: 1 mile --> Swim: 100 yards
The Big Kids Triathlon will have an individual start time. Course will follow a Reverse Triathlon format. The race will begin with a brief course overview inside the Transition Area at approximately 9:30am.

Run

The race starts with the run and will begin on the CMHS track. Our Big Kids Triathletes will circle the track, completing one half lap before enter the grass section which will be clearly marked. Runners will then continue on the blacktop for the final section of this run course which will lead them to the Transition Area.

Bike

The bike route will lead cyclists from the CMHS blacktop to the adjacent Jack Hammet Sports Complex "L" shaped parking lot which participants will circle one (1) time before returning to the CMHS blacktop where they will complete a short loop back to the Transition Area.

Swim

The swim will take place in the Costa Mesa Aquatics Center olympic length swimming pool where athletes will enter via steps at one end and swim two (2) lengths of the pool, rounding one (1) buoy placed at the far end. Swimmers will exit the pool via a ladder followed by a quick turn on the pool deck where participants will be greeted by our volunteers at the finish line.

Transition Area & Set up

The race will have one transition area. Transition area for the Big Kids Tri will be open for set-up between 9:10am - 9:25am

Kids Triathlon Overview   
Run: 1/4 mile --> Bike: 1/2 miles --> Swim: 50 yards
The Kids Triathlon will have an individual start time. Course will follow a Reverse Triathlon format. Race will begin with a brief course overview inside the Transition Area at approximately 10:30 AM.

Run

The race starts with the run and will begin on the CMHS grass field. Athletes will follow the clearly marked route for a little over a 1/4 mile before continuing on the blacktop for the final section of this run course which will lead them to the Transition Area.

Bike

The bike route will lead cyclists from the CMHS blacktop to the adjacent Jack Hammet Sports Complex "L" shaped parking lot where participants will circle one-half (1/2) of the parking lot before returning to the CMHS blacktop where they will complete a short loop back to the Transition Area.

Swim

The swim will take place in the Costa Mesa Aquatics Center olympic length swimming pool where athletes will enter via steps at one end and swim one half length of the pool and back, rounding one (1) buoy placed approximately 25yds out. Swimmers will exit the pool via a ladder followed by a quick turn on the pool deck where participants will be greeted by our volunteers at the finish line.

Transition Area & Set up

The race will have one transition area. Transition area for the Kids Tri will be open for set-up between 10:10 AM - 10:25 AM. ? A pre-staging area for bicycles will be available beginning at 7:30 AM.

Pee Wee Triathlon Overview
Run: 100 yards --> Bike: 200 yards --> Swim: 25 yards
The Pee Wee Triathlon may have multiple heats to accommodate the number of registrants. Athletes will be provided heat details at Packet Pick-Up. Course will follow a Reverse Triathlon format. First heat will begin with a course overview inside the Transition Area at approximately 11:00am. Parents are able to watch their Pee Wee Triathletes from just a few yards away. Parents are welcome to assist their child(ren) with securing helmets inside the transition area, but we ask that each athlete is allowed to fully experience the race. This includes completing the transition from one leg of the race to the next (i.e. running to cycling / cycling to swimming). We have designed this course to allow friends and family visibility throughout the race.

Run

The race starts with the run and will begin on the CMHS blacktop. Athletes will continue on a straight course until they reach the Transition Area.

Bike

The bike route will lead our young cyclists on a loop around the CMHS blacktop and back to the Transition Area.

Swim

The swim will take place in the Costa Mesa Aquatics Center olympic length swimming pool where athletes will enter via steps at one end and swim across the width of the pool. Swimmers will exit the pool via a ladder followed by a quick turn on the pool deck where they will be greeted by our volunteers at the finish line. The OC Kids Tri will have kickboards and swim noodles available for our less than confident swimmers as well as volunteers in the water to provide assistance where needed.

Transition Area & Set up

The race will have one transition area. Transition area for the Pee Wee Tri will be open for set-up between 10:40am - 10:55am. A pre-staging area for bicycles will be available beginning at 7:30am.

  • The complete course is located within Costa Mesa High School and the adjoining parking lot of the Jack Hammett Sports Complex.
  • Plenty of first come first serve parking is available in two separate high school parking lots off of Fairview Road.
