The 2nd in 7 of the Southeaster Trail Series races.  This race is a fund raiser for Camp Smile-a-Mile with all proceeds beind donated to Camp SAM.  The race is held in the back of Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, Al.  This is the states largest park with plenty to do for the entire family.  The park offers variety of camping offers from primitive, to RV to cabins on a private lake.  While you race the rest of the family can enjoy hiking, mountian biking, swiming canoeing, paddle boat, fishing, horse back riding, petting zoo.  Stay the weekend with the entire family and enjoy the park.

Course Information:


This is the perfect run for a First-Ultra or anyone who just wants  to see what a trail race is like.  The course is 3.35 miles long, per loop.  It is run in the counterclockwise direction. The 50K will consist of nine laps plus a shorter loop at the end.  The 12 Hour Challenge will use the same course for the first 11 hours.  As runners start the final hour of the race they will be directed onto the same short loop.  The short loop is not shown on the map.
The trail is primarily used year round for mountain biking.  Each loop consist of 270 feet of elevation pretty evenly spread out through out the course.  This is not a technical course but rather a very fast trail course that you could anticipate setting a PR on.

Directions:


Oak Mountain State Park, Fees and Directions:  The park charges $ 3.00 per person to enter the park.  Please bring cash.  Friday afternoon the North entrance off Hwy 119 will be open.  Saturday morning everyone must enter at the South Entrance from Oak Mountain Park Road near Interstate 65.  (The North Entrance does not open until 7:00AM.)  To reach the South Entrance, exit I 65 at Hwy 119 (exit 246) and head east.  (If you are coming in from the north, (Birmingham or I 459,) turn right.  If you are coming from the south (Montgomery), turn left.)  About 200 ft past the interstate you will turn left at the light.  This is State Park Road.  In 1.5 miles it crosses back under the interstate and in another 0.4 mile comes to a stop sign.  Turn left into the park and continue to the fee booth.  (Saturday morning there may be a gate half way across the road with a stop sign on it.  Please go around the gate to the booth.  The guard will allow you to enter.)

Directions to the Start, Cedars Pavilion:
  From the Pay Booth at the south entrance to Oak Mountain State Park continue down John Findley Dr for 2.6 miles.  You will pass the riding stables, golf course and go below the dam of Double Oak Lake.  (The dam will be on your right.)  Take the first road to the right past the dam.  Watch for the sign to the race and turn right onto Oak Mountain Park Rd.  Go 1.25  miles to a large parking lot on the right.  We will have signs telling you where to turn.  Park in this large parking lot at the far end (south end.)  Follow the signs back to the pavilion.

Other Information
The Run for Kids Challenge 50K and 12 Hour Run will provide water, Cokes, Hammer Gels and Heed sport drink and a few snacks like candy, chips, oranges, bananas, cookies and electrolyte capsules at the aid station.  We will add peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, turkey and Swiss roll-ups, cheese roll-ups, soup and boiled potatoes with salt as the day progresses.  Runners will need to bring any other supplies and supplements they will need during the race.  There will be plenty of room for your cooler and drop bag at the aid station.  (The Cedars Pavilion.)

Following the 50K run and the 12 hour run we will grill hamburgers and veggie burgers plus assortment of other foods and drinks for the runners.  Family meal tickets will be available for $ 5.00 each.  Please let us know before race day if you will be needing additional meal tickets.  Race shirts must be purchased during registration.  There will be a very limited number of shirts available for runners registering Friday afternoon and Saturday morning before the race.  They will be given out on a first come first serve basis.  All registration fees go directly to Camp SAM and we are trying to keep expenses to a minimum.
