It is official; Vincenzo Nibali has decided to make his debut at this season’s Tour of Flanders which will start later this spring. According to a latest report published on Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, team’s coach Paolo Slongo has given the rider his blessings saying: “He has the green light from us”.
This will be the first time for Nibali’s career to become part of the tour despite having previously mentioned the idea of racing the Ronde, a wish that was never put into practice.
The champion came pretty close to riding the Tour of Flanders back in 2014 with the main intention to get as much experience as he could ahead of Tour de France. However, his Astana squad seemed to change their mind giving Nibali other chances to shine later on that year.
“Vincenzo has long expressed his desire to race Flanders. And we will not object to his will,” Nibali’s coach told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “We have talked about it better in the last days, and from us there is the green light.”
The Vuelta al País Vasco?
According to the report La Gazzetta dello Sport published earlier today, Nibali’s entourage are trying their best to get the rider from Flanders to the Vuelta al País Vasco, an event that wil start the following day.
As for now, before the Tour of Flanders starts, Nibali is trying his best to kick off his 2018 campaign at the Dubai Tour which will start in February 6 until February 10 ahead of the following five-day Tour of Oman which starts on February 13.
After finishing these tours, Nibali’s calendar involves riding the Strade Bianche event before heading to Tirreno-Adriatico, and finally, Milan-San Remo.
