Sir Bradley Wiggins said a couple of hours ago that he is planning to start a women’s cycling squad that will run alongside his men’s team.
The former Tour de France winner now aims to use his foundation that was able to back the Wiggle High5 team in its early years, to raise enough money to be able to run a parallel women’s squad.
“If we can get the money together then we will have a women’s Team Wiggins outfit,” Wiggins said yesterday after Tour de France’s stage 15 while podcasting with Eurosport.
A big challenge
Wiggins, 38, said that funding was a crucial part of this project and also one of the biggest challenges he will have to face, however, his desire to create a women’s team is strong enough to keep him motivated and work towards this change for the better.
“Funding is the biggest challenge but we would love to have a women’s team running side-by-side.”
When discussing Mark Cavendish decision to abandon the race after not reaching the time limit on Wednesday, Wiggins said that “Mark Cavendish will be back,”
“He’s had a pretty up and down year with crashes. He’s not returned to the form he was at two years ago but the problem with Cav is he sets his standard at winning four stages minimum so if he doesn’t do that, he’s judged against past years,” he added.
According to Wiggins, that’s the main side-effect of Cavendish’s greatness. “He’s already thinking about what he can win next.”
