Michal Kwiatkowski and David de la Cruz named as Team Sky’s leaders for Vuelta

Michal Kwiatkowski and David de la Cruz are officially the riders that will lead Team Sky at this season’s Vuelta a Espana, the third biggest grand tour in the world of cycling.

After being unable to delegate this crucial role to four-time Tour de France winner and current Vuelta champion Chris Froome, and also current Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas, Team Sky has now decided to give this responsibility to their next best riders.

Michal Kwiatkowski and David de la Cruz, in the absence of Froome and Thomas, will lead the 8-rider team consisting of Briton, Tao Geoghegan Hart, Colombia’s Sergio Henao, Russia’s Pavel Sivakov, Spain’s Jonathan Castroviejo, Italy’s Salvatore Puccio and Holland’s Dylan van Baarle.

Not defending his title

Fortunately for this year’s Vuelta, Froome, the 2017 champion, has decided to not return back and defend his title after an impressive performance he has given these last couple of years.

For Froome, the 2017 Vuelta win came right after the 2017 Tour de France win and it was followed by the May 2018’s Giro d’Italia win. However, Froome was only able to grab third overall at July’s Tour de France which his teammate Geraint Thomas won.

Now, both teammates will compete for Team Sky at the Tour of Britain. It starts on September the seconds and ends in September the ninth.

“We always enjoy racing at La Vuelta. Historically we’ve enjoyed great success at this race. We’ve finished on the podium four times before winning in 2017,” team Sky’s CEO, Brailsford said.

“We’ve had a great season to date, winning both the Giro and the Tour. We’re determined to finish the season well.”
