During an interview for Sunday Times Magazine, this season’s Tour de France winner, Geraint Thomas, said that there is no reason why cyclists should not wear a helmet.
According to Thomas, all cyclists should be in a way forced to wear it. Especially when looking back at hundreds of fatal cycling accidents that could have been prevented if the riders would have worn these crucial, life-saving tools.
Currently speaking, the UK government is carefully reviewing the cycling safety laws. They are specifically designed to protect both riders and other people while on the roads.
“I’ve never ridden a bike in London, apart from in a race. I’ve watched from a taxi and it does seem a bit crazy. I would certainly make helmets compulsory,” Thomas told the Sunday Times Magazine.
“I always wear a helmet, I’ve put on a helmet more times than I’ve buckled a seatbelt. Helmets have come on a lot – well ventilated, not too hot, you don’t look stupid – no reason not to,” he added.
Cycling UK’s opinion
On the other hand, the Cycling UK aka the UK’s national cycling charity is now fighting to implement helmet-related laws. It is working on different campaigns to promote their importance because according to Cycling UK, they are vital in preventing fatal accidents from taking place.
“Evidence shows that the health benefits of cycling are so much greater than the relatively low risks involved. Even if these measures caused only a very small reduction in cycle use. This would still almost certainly mean far more lives being lost through physical inactivity than helmets could possibly save, however effective,” he charity said.
