All swimmers can relate to different shoulder pains and aches. Especially the professional aquatic athletes. Shoulder’s surgeries are commonly suggested when one suffers from severe pains and stiffness in their shoulder joints. That is why; an interesting development is conducted by Dr Mike Greiwe. He is a United States Maters Swimmer; located on the Northern Kentucky Swordfish Masters squad in Erlanger, Kentucky.
He has been able to develop the first-ever shoulder replacement. According to this surgery method, the rotator cuff, muscles and tendons which are located in front of the shoulder of the patient are able to be persevered without the need of using external ones.
No more traditional shoulder surgery…
According to Dr. Grewe’s method, in order to maintain the patient’s own cuff, he uses some specially designed instruments that separate the tendons and muscles in order to access the damaged area. Just like the traditional surgery but without the need to cut and pull the rotator cuff out that also requires a long time for the patient to fully recover. According to this new surgery method, the patient is expected to recover in less than three months.
“We’ve been working very hard to develop a shoulder replacement technique that reduces pain and speeds up healing; this will be a significant game changer for patients and their surgeons.” – Dr. Greiwe admitted.
He also added: “Our new method of replacing the shoulder joint by going in from the back, rather than the front, helps people immensely from a pain standpoint”.
According to this method, Dr. Greiwe confirms that this method eliminates all potential complications. This due to the fat the rotator cuff continues to stay on its place. All patients undergoing this new, surgery, have reported to need a significant lower recovery time and also, less medications and physical therapy.
