Giro d’Italia update: Geraint Thomas moves to second place after the fourth stage

Giro d'Italia 2017

Geraint Thomas, Team Sky’s cyclist, moved into second place in the overall classification of Giro d’Italia after being able to finish in the third place during yesterday’s stage four.

Even though he was only six seconds behind Bob Jungels from Quick-Step team, Thomas was able to classify himself into the second place in the overall classification of the race. His teammate, Briton Adam Yates was around four seconds behind him. On the other hand, Yates from team Orica was able to get the eighth place.

The fourth stage which contained a 181 km route and finished in Mount Etna, was won by Slovenia’s Jan Polanc from UAE Team Emirates. Since the first 2 kilometers, Polanc was able to break away from the other cyclists.

Today’s stage takes place in Pedara and finishes in Messina. Giro d’Italia will last until 28 May and its last race will take the cyclists to Milan.

Thomas, during an interview, added: “There was a bit of a headwind in the last 2km so everyone was a bit of apprehensive. I felt good and obviously it was nice to win the sprint for the third [place] and get a few seconds as well. I felt pretty good on the climb but, with it being a headwind, everyone like myself didn’t really want to go too early.”

He also admitted wining the sprint acted as a strong boost even though he was quite clear that there’s still a long way to go until Milan…
