Italian rider, Vincenzo Nibali has just claimed his second victory in the Giro Di Lombardia by giving an impressive performance throughout the race.

Today’s victory marks the second one for Nibali who claimed a similar win to Como a couple of years ago.

“I got big support from my team I had great physical condition from the end of the season, but everyone was looking to me as the favorite so it wasn’t easy to win,” Nibali said during an interview right after finishing the race.

“Today my plan was just to have a great race. I’ve had a lot of good placings this year but without the big win that I was looking for and to win a Monument it is always something great.”

Nibali was able to move into a lead group with only 18 km to go on the Civiglio which was the penultimate climb of the day. Soon after that segment, he bridged across FDJ’s rider, Thibaut Pinot creating an intense two-man escape that quickly separated them from the others.

Another notable attacker was Alaphilippe who shot out of the main group going off in catching Nibali during the last kilometers. Unfortunately, he ran out of time to close the gap.

“It’s incredible. I didn’t expect to finish on the podium today and had a strange feeling after the World Championships, but I kept focused and my team did a really good job. I did my best but I couldn’t follow Nibali when he attacked. I’m not disappointed, it’s already something special to finish on the podium of a Monument,” Alaphilippe said.
