Breaking news: Froome to compete at UCI Road World championships later this week

Chris Froome La vuelta

Yes, the decision is already made; Chris Froome will return back on the road to compete at UCI World Championships, one of the biggest bike events of the year, in Norway, next week.

Only a couple of days after winning the Vuelta a Espana title, British cyclist seems to be unstoppable. He will now headline the Britain’s cycling team to the Road World Championships that will take place in Norway on September 17 until September 24.

According to the British Cycling coaches, Froome will compete in the time trial on September 20 on a 31-kilometre route which features a tough climb.

Only a couple of days ago, Froome became the first British cyclist to win the Vuelta a Espana tour. He also became the third person in history to win both, Tour de France and La Vuelta at the same season.

On the women’s road race, the leader will be Lizzie Deignan who only recently recovered from an appendectomy. She now aims to regain the title she won back in 2015.

Missing pieces

Even though Mark Cavendish and Geraint Thomas decided to withdrew themselves from selection for the World Championships, the Olympic team, gold medalists, Pete Kennaugh and also Owain Doull will be more than enough to fill the void in the race.

Aside from these absences, British Cycling head coach, Iain Dyer, was happy to have so many talented and champions to choose from at the end of a tough season.

“Selection for this year’s road world championships was a difficult one due to the depth of talent we have in Great Britain across the board, which is a good position to be in,” – the head coach said.

“I’m delighted to see Chris Froome wishing to finish his season in Great Britain Cycling Team colours after another fantastic year for him. I’m looking forward to seeing him in action on a course which suits his strengths.

“There are some notable omissions from the squad, such as Mark Cavendish and Geraint Thomas, which is unfortunate but understandable. We are coming to the end of a long season for the road riders. Injury and illness becomes inevitable so we respect their decisions to withdraw themselves from selection.” – he added.
