Half Iron Swim Course

The 1.2 mile (2000m) swim will start from the wide beach of Lake Monticello and follow a clockwise triangular course back to the beach. It is the same course as the Olympic but Turn Buoy #2 will be further to provide the .3 mile longer distance. There will be approximately 3 swim waves starting 4 minutes apart. Final waves will be determined by Saturday at Packet Pickup. See Wetsuits/Water Temperature information below for more details.

Half Iron Bike Course

The bike is 2 loops of a 28 mile scenic aero-bike friendly course with long flat stretches mixed with moderatly rolling hills. The last few miles will be a nice overall downhill before you begin the run.  Please click on the maps elevation profiles for further details. There will be an aid station with a water bottle handoff at approximately mile 8, 19, and 35 & 46. Hammer Gels will be available at every aid station and Heed will be available for your water bottles at mile 19 & 46.

Half Iron Run Course

The run is a 13.1 mile course in the friendly neighborhood of Lake Monticello. Runners will experience flat stretches mixed with moderate hills. Homeowners will be cheering you on right from their front yards. As you come home into the finish there will be a scenic view of Lake Monticello and a celebration circle of post race food and drinks. There will be an aid station at the run start and approximately every 2 miles with water and Lemon Lime Heed by Hammer Nutrition. Hammer Gels will also be available at the turnarounds.

Swim Start & Exit

Both the Olympic .9 mile swim and the Half Iron 1.2 mile swim will be a clockwise triangular course. They are the same course but Turn Buoy #2 will be placed further out on the Half Iron course to provide the .3 mile longer distance. Each will start and finish from the wide beach shore of Lake Monticello. After exiting the swim, participants will run approximately 50 meters on sand and smooth boardwalk to the asphalt based transition area.

Wetsuits / Water Temperatures

Lake Monticello water temperatures average in the 60’s for this time of year. Last years water temperature on May 1, 2011 was 69 degrees. Wetsuits can be either purchased or rented from the official wetsuit and rental partner XTERRA Wetsuits. Look for the race e-newsletters with special XTERRA Wetsuit offers up to 50% off regular price.

The Lake Monticello venue is a gated community and closed to all non-residents. All residents and their guests must follow the Lake Monticello Owner’s Association rules for swimming in the lake. Any swim rules that are broken will result in disqualification from the race. Thank you for being a conscientious triathlete and taking pride in following the rules and bringing awareness to others.
