Please join us to Fight Childhood Cancer

Mackenzie was a healthy little girl at the time of diagnosis, she lost her fight to childhood cancer in December 2016.  She is a reminder to all athletes to never give up, and to keep fighting!  All proceeds will go to Children's Cancer.

On March 22, 2016, Mackenzie was taken to the emergency department after she spent the morning vomiting. A CT Scan showed swelling of the ventricles and a collection of cerebral spinal fluid within her brain.

Mackenzie was transferred to Georgetown University Hospital Center, where an MRI identified a large tumor between her ventricles blocking the flow of spinal fluid. A neurosurgeon completed her first emergency surgery on March 23, 2016 to place an external ventricular drain to remove excess fluid and remove part of the mass for biopsy. Mackenzie was given six days to stabilize, prior to a second surgery on March 29, 2016 for a near total removal of the remaining tumor.

The pathology results returned as a malignant cancer, known as Atypical Teratoid Rhaboid Tumor (ATRT). This is an extremely rare, aggressive cancer seen in only 3 children out of 1,000,000.

Mackenzie is under the care of the neuro-oncology team at Children's National Medical Center, where her treatment regimen includes an experimental drug as part of a study with St. Jude's, six months of aggressive chemotherapy, followed by focal radiation therapy, consolidated with an additional two months of chemotherapy, and then maintenance cycles for the last six months.

In the 45 days she was hospitalized between March 22 and May 5, 2016, Mackenzie has fought her way through 8 surgeries, 7 of which were brain surgeries. This amazing little girl has astounded everyone, including her doctors, with her resilience and strength. Please consider showing your support to her and her family.
