The McDowell Trails Association is pleased to host its 8th Annual MTA Triathlon at Lake James on May 20, 2017 at the Paddy's Creek Section of Lake James State Park. The triathlon consists of a 750 meter lake swim, 22 mile ride, and 5K run.
Lake James is a great venue for multi-sport events. The scenery is breathtaking, with views of Lake James visible from almost everywhere on the course. Whether you're a seasoned veteran or new to the multisport experience, this is a must-do event.
USAT sanctioning and professional event management provided by Glory Hound Events.
All proceeds benefit the McDowell Trails Association, whose mission is "To partner with any agency, organization, or group of individuals to establish greenways, blueways, and non-motorized trails in McDowell County."
All participants must finish the event in under 3 hours, 30 minutes. Race officials reserve the right to remove any participant from the course who it deems unlikely to finish the event within the stated time limit.
The triathlon swim (750 meters) features a wave start and follows an open water course on Lake James.
The ride (22 miles) is a well-marked, on-road course consisting of 4 miles on state park property and an 18 mile loop with views of the lake all along the way.
The run (5K) is mostly on non-technical dirt trail with approximately 1/4 to 1/2 mile of pavement.
