_ 2017 Ironman 70.3 Steelhead:
Southwest Michigan’s Saint Joseph/Benton Harbor area is known for its beaches, wineries and fruit orchards, and family-friendly vibe. There's plenty to do, whether you're 5 or 55. For kids, there's The Carousel, a hands-on kids’ museum, and for the older set, a Jack Nicklaus signature golf course. From kayaking, to lounging on the beach, to taking in some art and good food in the quaint and artistic downtown, Benton Harbor is the perfect low-stress locale to spend a race weekend.
The 1.2-mile swim in the clear refreshing waters of Lake Michigan, begins on the beach. The bike course winds through rolling wine country and orchards, and the shaded run is lined with enthusiastic volunteers. Athletes finish on the beach, where families can hang out and play until athletes finish the race.
The Maytag IRONMAN 70.3 Steelhead is also a Regional IRONMAN TriClub Championship race. In addition to club "members only" special on site events, athletes who are a members of a TriClub or Team, earn bonus points for their club towards the prestigious IRONMAN TriClub Annual Podium Award.
The swim course will start and finish at Jean Klock Park. Athletes will walk about 200 yards from the transition to the swim start. The swim will be a one loop swim of 1.2 miles. Athletes will exit the water and will run/walk through sand for 200 yards to the transition area. Lake Michigan can be calm or choppy depending on the winds, so expect 1-3 foot waves. Athletes will swim outside a line of buoys and inside a line of lifeguards on rescue boats, kayaks and surfboards. Updated course map coming soon!
The 56-mile bike course will take triathletes through the scenic northern Berrien and eastern Van Buren counties. This area is part of the Michigan "fruit belt" and includes numerous farms as well as vineyards and orchards.
Athletes will start on the beach at Jean Klock Park and run through part of Harbor Shore’s Jack Nicklaus golf course. Then athletes will run through two loops of the beautiful Whirlpool Corporate campus park. You will finish up on the gorgeous beach at Jean Klock Park. The course is mostly flat with a couple of short hills.
