 _ 2017 IronMan Florida Triathlon:

One of the most storied North American races, IRONMAN Florida began in November, 1999. It takes place in Panama City Beach, which is known for pristine beaches and moderate fall temperatures. Just as the summer season winds down, it's the perfect time of year to visit northwest Florida—and the event is as much a destination vacation as it is a race.

The swim takes place in the Gulf of Mexico, where athletes will have a short beach run in between laps. Waters are typically in the mid 70's, allowing athletes to wear wetsuits. The two-loop swim course gives spectators a bird's eye view of the entire course.

After exiting the water, athletes are challenged by a fast, flat, one-loop bicycle course. The terrain pushes the body in a way most athletes are not accustomed to: the absence of rolling hills or steep inclines forces consistent pacing. Winds are typically light in the morning, but become more challenging later in the day.

The two-loop run course, while flat, has many turns throughout the local neighborhoods. In the spectator-friendly area, thousands of residents and visitors emerge for fall get-togethers while supporting the competitors. The course also winds through St. Andrew's State Park, a favorite among participants for its shaded areas and wildlife. After the second loop, athletes round the last corner for the final quarter mile to the finish.

Course Information:

The two loop swim takes place in the Gulf of Mexico. Athletes will have a short beach run between laps. Strong currents, riptides, and occasional marine life are possible; a universal flag system is used locally. Tinted goggles are recommended to block out the rising sun, the course is in a counter clockwise rotation. Water temperatures are typically in the low 70 degree F range making it wet suit legal.

IRONMAN Florida will feature a “Rolling Start” based on self- seeding. Athletes will self-seed into swim start corrals based upon their estimated swim finish time. Additionally there are intermediate cutoff times in place. Each athlete will be allotted 1 hour 10 minutes to complete the first loop and 2 hours 20 minutes to complete the entire course. Although you may be permitted to continue in the event, if you exceed these time limits you will be considered a DNF at the end of the day. Self-seeding will be based on your individual abilities according to your expected finish time. Swimming with like ability athletes will benefit you so you won’t be overtaken by stronger swimmers.

Athletes’ official race time will start at the water’s edge when they enter the water. All athletes will have the traditional 17 hours to complete the entire event (subject to intermediate cutoff times throughout the event).

The one-lap course is flat and fast. The highest point on the course is only 161 feet above sea level, and the wind tends to be light. Expect a fast bike split, and be prepared to stay in your aerobars.

This is one of the flattest runs on the IRONMAN circuit. Spectators fill the roads on the two-loop course, which parallels the shoreline through local neighborhoods to the turnaround in St. Andrews State Park. The sun sets early this time of year, so you may want to toss a long-sleeve shirt into your special needs bag.
