Triathlon : Specially designed for kidz with multiple disabilities |
KidzTri3 Challenge Champ, presented by Virtua, introduces kidz challenged with physcial, intellectual and multiple disabilities to the exciting world of triathlon in a fun and relaxed environment. These exceptional kidz will have "Race Guides" who will assist them as needed, through a short swim, bike, run/walk and together, cross the finish line!
Participant Race Age
Boys and girls ages 6 to 17 can participate in KidzTri3 Challenge Champ.
Swim -- Athletes will have a real treat swimming in a beautiful indoor Olympic pool, where many elite swimmers from across the country have swam before! Each athlete will enter the water one-by-one. Triathletes will complete a 50 yard swim by swimming on their own, with a pool noodle, or other swim aid. Triathletes that are not able to swim on their own will be placed in a raft and pulled around the swim course by their Race Guide. Upon completing the swim course, triathletes will exit the pool and walk, or be pushed by they Race Guide, in their wheelchair or other equipment, a brief distance to the Transition Area.
Bike -- Transitioning to the bike course, athletes will bike through flat campus roads, which will be closed to vehicular traffic during the race. Triathletes complete a 1 mile flat bike course on an adaptive bike, standard bike, or by using an adaptive cart pulled by their Race Guide. After triathletes complete the bike course, they will enter the Transition Area and transition to the run course.
Run -- Triathletes complete a 1/2 or 1 mile flat run course by walking, jogging, self-propelling their own wheelchair, walker, or other adaptive equipment. Triathletes that are not able to propel themselves can be pushed in a jogging stroller by their Race Guide throughout the course and through the finish line. For those triathletes that would like to walk across the finish line, they are welcomed and encouraged to stop before the finish line chute, put on their crutches, if needed, and cross the finish line on their own!
