Lodging
Camping – For registered racers and their families. Up to 200 people may camp onsite at Scotch Hall for free on Friday and Saturday night the weekend of the event. It is primitive camping with no showers, sewer, or electrical hookup. There will be portable water for washing your face and brushing your teeth. You can also bathe in Salmon Creek like the natives did for centuries. Community campfire available and our steel and metal storage buildings (across from camp site) can serve as temporary shelter should a thunderstorm blow in. Tents, Pop-ups and self contained RV’s are welcomed. There is a dessert and coffee campfire and acoustic entertainment Saturday night. Remember this is a neighborhood and people live here. The campsite is located away from existing homes but reasonable music levels and noise in the evening will be appreciated.  Please do not dive or jump from any docks in the community as the water level around them can be shallow at places. Campers must pick up a camper parking pass upon arrival. Camping check in is open all night Friday night but you must be escorted by a volunteer or guard to the camping site after dark.  The camping site is a few minute walk to the transition/start site and about a 10-12 minute walk to the run finish line/ award site near the pool. Bicycles are welcome but please no 4 wheelers or off road motorcycles in the compound. We will have shuttles running on race day between transition and the pool area. Campers will have access to reduced golf and cart fees, water access at Salmon Creek, and the roads in the community for biking and hiking. Salmon Creek is a great kayaking venue.

Motels and three square meals

In Windsor, Edenton, and Plymouth (all about 15 minutes away) lodging and food choices are available. See website for details. On site at Scotch Hall is a sandwich type grill by the pool area with extended hours the weekend of the event.

Race Packet Pick Up
Racers must pick up their own packet (no exceptions). You must show a photo ID to pick up your package and sign a release form.  Friday arrivals can pick up your race packet at the at the community entrance guard house from a Pound the Sound staff until 10 pm. Packet pick up on race day is at the transition/ start area Registration Tent from 7 am till 8:30. The race starts at 9am.  See site map on poundthesound.com under race info and directions and maps.

Race day and Parking
The Scotch Hall race gate, for spectators & racers who are not camping on site, will open at 7 am on race day. There will be sign directing you as you come in. Everyone will stop at the gate upon arrival. There volunteers will provide you either a spectator or contestants parking pass and direct spectators to a spectator parking area up by the pool compound (See site map). Contestant only parking is separate and close to the transition/start line area. You must be on the contestant list to park there.  We allow one car per contestant family in contestant parking.  Contestant families bringing more than one car and not camping on site will park additional cars in spectator parking. Contestant parking is close to the transition/start area and you can park and roll you bike and equipment across the street. Please do not try to drive up to the transition area to unload. It is a dead end street and we have provided contestant parking across the street to avoid congestion on race morning.

 Transition Area
The transition area in across the street from contestant parking and very close to start and finish of swim and bike portion of race. The run starts near the transition area but ends at the run finish line up by the pool where you have a great view of the course and sound. Our after race award party will happen up by the pool. The pool area is about 1 mile from the transition area and we will shuttle people back after the run starts and the race party ends. The transition area is for contestants only. Family members and supporters will not be allowed in the transition area. The transition area will be under staff control from 7 am Saturday morning until 1 hour after the awards program ends. All racers must show  their race bib to enter transition after the race. They must return their timer to remove bike from the area. See the transition area on the site map at poundthesound.com under race info and maps and directions.

Course Information:

The Swim Course
The swim occurs just off the Albemarle Sound in the protected mouth of Salmon Creek. This creek mouth is generally calm and without white caps on those occasional days when the sound is white capping just around the point. Racers will stage on a grassy slope and then enter the water and swim 750 meters around two buoys that form a triangle. There are usually no strong currents in the swim area but most of it will be deeper than the racers heads.  The transition area is right beside the swim entry area entry and exit. See the course map at poundthesound.com under race info and maps and directions.

The Bike Course

The bike course starts near the transition area and transitions out of Scotch Hall via Rieder, Clubhouse, Scotch Hall Blvd, Sutton Road, to Highway 45 and back.  The bike course is one 13.9 mile loop. The course is flat and takes place on county rounds that surround Scotch Hall. The roads are open to traffic - but traffic is usually fairly light. Notifications will be at each highway entry to the bike route making car traffic aware of the course. Portions of the road are shaded. Volunteers will be at each turn on the course. See the course map at poundthesound.com under race info and maps and directions.

The Run Course
The run course is entirely within Scotch Hall and very scenic. It starts near the transition area moves to Reider, Clubhouse, Scotch Hall Blvd., Majestic Circle (and it is) and returns to Reider  and ends at the pool in front of panoramic sound views. This is the award party site for the event.  See the course map at poundthesound.com under race info and maps and directions.
