Triathlon : Swim 1/2 Mile, Bike 20.5 Miles, Run 3.1 Miles |
Welcome to the 2016 Ukiah Triathlon at Lake Mendocino. Now in it's 24th year, we are excited to have the triathlon at Lake Mendocino once again this year. With the course remaining the same as 2015, the swim, bike start, bike finish and the entire run will be within the Lake Mendocino Recreation Area. With a single transition area and a bluff top finish with a spectacular view of the lake and surrounding mountains, athletes and spectators alike enjoy the venue. We hope you join us!
Located in picturesque Mendocino County, the Ukiah Triathlon starts with a 1/2 mile open water swim in Lake Mendocino, followed by a 20.5 mile loop bike ride on quiet rural roads adjacent to Lake Mendocino and concludes with a 3.1 mile run (with a few hills) within the Lake Mendocino recreation area. Average race day temperature ranges from a low of 55 F to a high of 89 F. The average water temperature is 72 degrees F.
The Ukiah Triathlon is once again the second leg of the Mendocino Triple Crown. Those who complete the Scary Monster of the Mendocino Monster (May22), the Ukiah Triathlon as an individual and the Hilly Harvest Ride (September 25) will be awarded a custom commemorative mug highlighting their accomplishment.
Swim:
All waves will start in the water. The three turn rectangular swim course goes in a clockwise direction. Upon exiting the water, there will be 1/4 mile run to the transition area. You will be allowed to have shoes/sandals at the swim exit for the run to the transition area.
Bike:
Exiting the transition area, you will proceed along Lake Mendocino Drive turning right onto Eastside Calpella Drive. You will proceed along Eastside Calpella as it turns into East Road. At the end of East Road, you will veer left onto West road and proceed to School Way. You will turn left onto School Way and return to East Road, where you will turn right. Once onto East Road you will return to Lake Mendocino Drive, turning left and return to the transition area. The bike course is open to vehicle traffic, please ride with caution. There will be one aid station on the bike course.
Run:
After exiting the transition area, the run course heads along Lake Mendocino drive turning left into the dirt "overflow parking area" and then winds around behind the camground prior to returning to the paved trail across the dam. The turnaround for the run course is at the end of the paved trail (1.1 miles). Once you return from the out/back section, you will return to the dirt and run downhill to the transition area where you will run the outer perimeter of the transition area prior to finishing at Joe Riley Day Use Area. There will be two aid stations on the run course.
Directions to Staging Point
Lake Mendocino is located just north of Ukiah, California. If you are coming from the San Francisco Bay Area, we are two hours north on Highway 101, take the Lake Mendocino exit and follow the signs to the lake.
