The Adult Tri is a "Sprint Triathlon" including a 1/4 mile swim in the pond, 5-6 mile mountain bike, and a 2.1 mile run. Racers leave the beach typically in two or three waves and swim around two buoys and back to the beach. After leaving the water, racers enter the transition area on the beach, grab their mountain bike and head out on the trails. The ride includes brief sections on the road, a few wide trails and a lot of single track riding. There are some easy sections, a few hills and 3-4 more technical areas of the route which travels through beautiful wooded areas of Hale Reservation and Noanet Woodlands. After returning to the beach on bikes, racers head into the woods for a trail run that is again, primarily on a single track. The run goes past the Hale ropes course, through the orchard and over the small waterfall bridge at Storrow Pond. It is a very scenic loop ending on the beach.
After 12:00 pm we begin two youth races. The first race is for the younger participants ages 6 to 9 who swim approximately 50 yards, bike for 1 mile and run 1/2 mile. It is not a "group start"- each racer leaves about 2 seconds after the person in front of them. In the transition area, volunteers (not parents) aid racers with getting on shoes and helmets. The ride is on a dirt road and does not include any technical mountain biking. Almost any bike is suitable. The run is along a trail and does require navigating some small rocky areas.
After the younger children complete their race, we kick off the Youth Senior Race for ages 10 to 15. This includes a 75 yard swim, a 2 mile bike and a 1 mile run. The start is the same as the race with the younger children and the mountain bike ride includes some more technical riding over rocky areas.
