The RTM Kids Triathlon (ages 10-14) is a 250-yard lake swim/wave start in the water, followed by a 3.3 mile bike totally contained with Nelson Park and on roads closed to motor vehicle traffic. The run is also within Nelson Park along the lake side on paved road. Both the bike and the run are an out-and-back course layout.
The RTM Kids Duathlon (ages 9-14) begins with a 1-mile run along Lake Decatur, out-and-back, a 3.3 mile bike and another 1-mile run, out-and-back on the same course.
The RTM Kids Duathlon (ages 5-8) begins with a .5 mile run, followed by a 1.5 mile bike and finishes with another .5 mile run. This race starts after the completion of the older kids tri and du for the safety of the younger kids.
Course Information:
Our Nelson Park Course is totally contained within the park for the kids' safety. The older kids have two hills to negotiate, runs are flat, both are out-and-back with lots of volunteers and police officers on the course to ensure safety and guide the young athletes. Water and first aid stations are spaced along the course.
Directions:
Coming to Decatur from the north or I-72: come south through downtown Decatur on US 51 South. Take the right-hand exit on to Lake Shore Drive, proceed east on Lake Shore Drive to Lost Bridge Road (third traffic signal), turn right and then take the first left into Nelson Park. Parking and packet pick-up will be on your left.
Coming to Decatur from the south on US 51: just after crossing Lake Decatur, take the right-hand exit to Lake Shore Drive to Lost Bridge Road (third traffic signal), turn right and then take the first left into Nelson Park. Parking and packet pick-up will be on your left.
Coming to Decatur from the east on US 36: cross Lake Decatur then turn left at the second traffic signal onto East Wood Street. Follow E. Wood to 22nd Street and turn left. Follow 22nd Street to the stop sign. 22nd becomes Lake Shore Drive and follows the contour of the lake. Turn left at the second traffic signal, Lost Bridge Road and then another left into Nelson Park. Parking and packet pick-up will be on your left.;
