2015 Rocky Knob Triathlon

Race Date – Saturday, September 19th, 2015

The 2nd Annual Rocky Knob Triathlon is no stroll in the park. You will start by running eight miles on paved and almost paved roads down, down a scenic route to the historic New River, which has been around for five hundred million years or so. Your route takes you over moderate hills and narrow bridges, crossing creeks that feed crops and critters on small farms, then flattens out at Wahoo’s Landing, where you will pick up your own (or somebody’s) kayak.

The New River awaits you with rocks, swirling pools, and whatever water level late summer brings to the event. You will have to get out and walk at least once over a low-water bridge, hauling your own (or somebody else’s) kayak with you. Observers will be in and along the New River and at low water bridge to ensure kayaker safety.

You will beach your boat at Cooper’s Store, where you will pick up your road bike. You will work your way for forty miles, up the New River Valley to Highway 421. Your grueling finish will take you back to the Watauga County Fairgrounds, where you will end as you began.
MORE DETAILS:

Preparation begins with packet pick-up at the Watauga County Fairgrounds, eight miles east of Boone off Roby Greene Road, on Friday afternoon. After that you will secure your kayak and your road bike by 7pm. How’s that? You will tie down your kayak at Wahoo’s Landing, then your bike at Cooper’s Store. You will be given a claim check for each. Your bike and kayak will be safe overnight and during the meet, but you will need your checks on site to claim them.

On Saturday morning you will be at The Fairgrounds by 6:45 AM. You will stagger-start your run at either 7 or 7:15 AM. Once you have reached the New River, stage two begins.

When you reach the river, you must launch your own kayak. Two miles down the river you will need to portage over the low-water bridge. A Friendly Suggestion: Do not try to duck under that low water bridge in your kayak… that’s why we call it The Guilliotine. Pick up your kayak and portage to the other side. After another three-mile run you will reach Cooper’s Store and pick up your bike.

You will ride the marked route up and down the New River Valley, Highway 194, and Old Highway 421 back to the Fairgrounds, where you will finish, returning to the starting point to finish your run. Timing your run begins and ends here and will be available for the complete run only, and not for segments.

There will be aid stations along the course providing water and snacks.

I don’t own a kayak…
You can rent one from Wahoo’s, New River Outfitters, or High Mountain Expeditions. Or you can borrow one from a paddler. Click here for area locations.

I don’t live in Boone…
You can spend a couple of nights in a wide variety of comfortable places. And we have good restaurants to feed your support team. Click here for area information.

Packet Pickup
will be at the Fairgrounds on Friday afternoon, September 18th, from 1pm til 6pm. You will need to show a photo ID and sign a waiver of RKT liability.

Parking
at the Fairgrounds is ample, but limited everywhere else along the route.

Registration
will be available online only starting May 1 at 8am and will close whenever the two-hundredth person ponies up. Registration will close September 16th. No registration will be available the day of the meet. The individual fee is $60, The two-man team fee $90, the three-man fee $120. Kiwanis encourages student participation with a reduced rate of $50 for one, $80 for two, and $110 for three. Registrants will receive a lightweight silver and blue Rocky Knob Triathlon tee shirt. Shirts cannot be guaranteed after September 4th.

Timing
Chip timed!

Your Route
will be marked. Volunteers will assist you as necessary at Wahoo’s Landing, at Todd Island, at Cooper’s Store, and at key points along the route with water, band-aids, snacks, and the like, but you will do all the hauling. Officers will monitor highway crossings, and EMT personnel will be available for — God forbid — serious accidents.
• A Friendly Suggestion: Do not try to duck under that low water bridge in your kayak… that’s why we call it The Guilliotine. Pick up your kayak and portage to the other side.

Rules of the Road
The RKT is an open-road run subject to North Carolina traffic laws. Bicycle helmets will be required; ear buds are prohibited. Your kayak may be of any type and length but must be a solo craft. To qualify as a team, each member must complete at least one segment of the route individually.

SAG Support
Volunteers will provide assistance enroute. Not all will be experienced bike mechanics. Vehicles will carry cell phones, tubes, air, and minor first aid kits. Boone Bike and Touring and Magic Cycles provide bike techs along the route, but they may not be available wherever you break down. Carry any special chains, tubes, etc. with you. Cell phone service may be sporadic. Come prepared.

Your Chip
must be displayed on your ankle at the finish line. For team members, use caution in passing the chip; you will be charged $25 for a lost one. At the finish line an official will collect your chip. Timing stops at 2pm.

After the Run
we will have food and drinks for all, but no showers. Sorry about that. How about we all sweat together?

Timed Results
will be posted on the website by noon on Sunday, September 20th.
