WE APOLOGIZE FOR THE INCONVENIENCE, BUT THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO SWIMMING ON SATURDAY. ANYONE IN THE WATER WILL BE DISQUALIFIED FROM SUNDAYS TRIATHLON.
Wave –Time –Divisions- Distance-Cap Color
SWIM - Participants will pass 1 aid station between the swim exit and the transition area.
BIKE - Half Iron participants will hit aid stations at 13 miles, 28 miles, and 43 miles. International participants should carry enough drink with them to complete their 22 mile bike course. Participants will hit an aid station before entering transition to get on their bike and immediately after exiting transition starting the run.
RUN - Participants will pass 7 aid stations each 6.5-mile lap on the run course. One will be immediately after exiting the transition area.
You need to drink lots of fluids AND EAT! You must eat to keep from becoming sodium deficient. Sports drink will definitely help with this versus water, but you still need to eat! We also highly recommend you take some Endurolytes before the race and periodically throughout the race. This will keep your electrolyte levels in check and prevent cramping.
All aid stations will have three sections to keep things simple. You will encounter a table and volunteers with water first, then a table and volunteers with CytoMax, and lastly a table and volunteers with food (Hammer Gel, bananas, and oranges)
Due to the large volume of participants (2000+) in this event, there is no spectator parking at Larry & Penny Thompson Park. Spectator parking is available at Zoo Miami. Spectators must carpool with participants if they wish to watch the swim portion of the race as the first tram from Zoo Miami is after the swim has finished. Foot traffic is not allowed on the tram path and it is too far to go around on foot.
Another great option is to become a race volunteer! This will get you VIP parking and an up close and personal view of the event that is unavailable to regular spectators. Plus, it is a lot of fun! Email [email protected] if you are interested in volunteering for this or any other MultiRace event.
Staff & Volunteers that need to park at Larry & Penny will receive special passes.
If you are racing with friends, please carpool!!!
You will be given a parking pass at packet pickup on Saturday when you come to our awesome expo and check in your bike. That parking pass is for race morning. You must follow the directions on the parking pass to your assigned entrance to the park. YOUR EXIT OFF THE TURNPIKE WILL BE DIFFERENT THAN HOW YOU CAME ON SATURDAY FOR MOST PEOPLE. By coming from multiple directions, we can prevent long lines of cars from blocking the roadways on race morning. You will only be allowed to enter through your assigned entrance. This allows us to quickly and orderly park nearly 2000 cars in the park in less than 2 hours. Not following these rules would create chaos, so please display your parking pass on your dash and use its directions to get to your assigned entrance.
It is very important that all participants know the course. It will be very well marked on the run and the bike, but it is your responsibility to pay attention and look for the signs, however large they may be. There are 2 signs that are the most important as they are positioned when you finish a run and bike lap. The one at the end of the run lap is pictured below:
When you come out of transition, you will see it immediately. Stay to the right, then proceed to make your 6.55 mile lap. When you encounter it a 2nd time, you will have completed 1 lap. At this point International Distance participants will stay to the left and go through the finish line. Half Iron Distance participants will stay to the right and complete 1 more lap.
On the bike course, you will encounter the following sign at mile 11:
At this point International Distance competitors should make an immediate U-turn and Half Iron Distance competitors should continue straight.
The Half Iron Bike course goes another 2 miles (13 total) to the aid station, then does two 15 mile loops before returning along the same 13 mile stretch that brought them out for a total of 56 miles. Once you have completed the first 28 miles you will encounter the sign pictured below:
At this point you will turn left and complete one more 15-mile loop. Once you have completed both 15 mile loops, you will see this sign for the 2nd time. At that point you will turn right and return along the 13-mile stretch back to transition.
If you are confused about anything, please consult the race maps. It is YOUR responsibility to know the course.
PLEASE DO NOT ALTER YOUR RACE NUMBERS IN ANY WAY (cutting down, display incorrectly, etc.)! THE USAT OFFICIALS WILL PENALIZE YOU IF YOU DO. There are three race numbers in your race packet that you are required to display during the event. The bicycle frame number is the large sticker and should be wrapped around your seat post or frame so that the number is upright and visible from both sides of your bicycle. The small sticker is the helmet number and must be affixed to the front of your helmet. The run number must be displayed during the run segment on the front of your body. You will not need any pins for your run race number. In you race packet you will find a custom Miami Man race belt to use for the run.
Your race packet includes professional quality race tattoos with your race number. This includes three sets of your specific race number as a temporary tattoo and category/age group tattoos. One race number will be applied on your right bicep, one on your left bicep, and one on the outside of your left leg between your calf and shin. The category/age group ID tattoo will be applied to your right calf. (Note: the category tattoo might not be your exact age; it is used to indicate what age category you are in. For example: a person with a 55 on his/her right calf is in the 55-59 age group). Those competing on Relay Teams, as an Athena or as a Clydesdale will each receive an "R", "C" or an "A" tattoo to wear instead of your race-age number. You have the option to apply the tattoos at packet pickup on Saturday with the assistance of our staff. If you decide to apply the tattoos yourself please read the detailed instructions included in the tattoo packet before applying. Do not apply body lotion or sunscreen until after you have body marked with your tattoos. It is ok to wear your tattoos while sleeping, swimming or showering. Apply the tattoos to your body the day before the event. This creates a better bond with your skin, and then apply sunscreen on Sunday morning. PLEASE use sunscreen, this is still South Florida! Please remember the tattoos must be applied to clean skin with no oils or lotion and do this before you go to bed on Saturday.
The swim cap placed in your race packet must be worn during the swim. Do not trade your swim cap with another athlete, as the caps are color coded to assist race management in organizing you at the swim start. The cap must be worn during the entire swim and taken back to the transition area with you. A variable time penalty will be assessed to anyone leaving their cap on the beach.
Bike check-in on Saturday is MANDATORY. You may check your bike in anytime between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. For security reasons, once your bike is checked in, you will not be able to remove it until race morning. We will have plenty of guards keeping a close eye on your precious set of wheels! DO NOT LEAVE ANY OTHER VALUABLES IN TRANSITION, especially small items that can be smuggled out (including power-tap bicycle computers).
Only registered racers that have their custom Miami Man wristband on will be allowed to enter the transition area at any time, before, during, or after the race. This is for the protection of your equipment, so please obey all of the rules and respect the security guards who are there protecting your stuff! If you lose your wrist band please go to the information tent for assistance in retrieving your bike. ANYONE CAUGHT TRYING TO JUMP, CLIMB, OR CROSS THE TRANSITION SECURITY FENCE AT ANY TIME WILL BE IMMEDIATELY DISQUALIFIED-EVEN AFTER THE EVENT! You may only enter transition at the 2 guarded entrances-NO EXCEPTIONS! We are serious about securing your valuables! You should be too!
Head USAT Race Official will go over the most commonly violated rules and how to avoid getting a penalty. Our official Coach will go over training, nutrition, and last minute racing tips. A Miami Man staff member will have a Q&A session following each clinic.
*This clinic is mandatory for anyone doing the Miami Man for the first time and highly recommended to everyone.
This is a very family friendly event. Spectators can watch the swim from a great spot along the nearly 1 mile edge of the lake. There is even a children's playground right next to the finish line! Afterwards, they can go on over to Zoo Miami to check out one of the nations best zoos while they cheer on competitors who are on the run course. Zoo Miami will be providing a tram service to transport people back and forth to the zoo. The tram runs every 90 minutes from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., see schedule below. The zoo is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Admission discounts may be available, just ask the tram driver. Go to www.zoomiami.org for more information on the zoo.
Miami, FL (January 2013) - It has been said; "Miami Man just keeps getting better and better," and thanks to our valued participants, the results are in! Once again, The Miami Man Half Iron and International Triathlon was voted "BEST TRIATHLON" in the Southeast by Competitor Magazine. Additionally, the event earned the title "BEST RACE SWAG" as well. Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote!
Distance: 1.2 Miles - 1/2 Iron | .6 Mile - International
The swim will take place in Larry and Penny's crystal clear lake. The swim portion is open all summer long for swimming. Participants will start on the North side of the beach and swim a .6 mile loop clockwise around the lake. International distance participants will swim 1 lap, while Half Iron participants will swim 1 lap, exit the water, run through the arch and across the scoring line, then re-enter the water and swim a 2nd lap.
Participants will encounter an aid station with drinks and food between the swim exit and the transition area.
The swim course and the crystal clear lake were extremely popular with last year's participants as it was voted the 2nd best thing about the race, just edged out by the run course and followed by our volunteers.
Distance: 56 Miles - 1/2 Iron | 22 Miles - International
The bike ride will go through farmland areas of unincorporated Miami-Dade county (the Redlands), all on paved roads of course, and will encounter very little vehicular traffic. The course will be well marked with arrows at each intersection both as signs on each stop sign and as arrows painted on the pavement. There will also be police controlling traffic at each intersection where riders would normally stop for a stop sign or traffic light and at each intersection where the course turns. Last year the event earned high praises for the excellent work by the police keeping the course safe and because there was so little traffic on the course, but remember that it is an open course, so you will see an occasional car on the road. As always, in the rare event of an emergency, riders may need to stop as safety always comes first. The first mile or two has the most traffic of the entire course, so be especially vigilant from the start through the 2nd stoplight.
International distance participants will follow the same course as the half iron, except they will make a U-turn at the 11 mile point and return along the same course they took out. This makes the bike a 22 mile course with an aid station at the 11-mile turnaround. The turnaround is just before Krome avenue for those plotting out the course in advance. TURN AT THE 4'X8' SIGN ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD THAT SAYS INTERNATIONAL U-TURN!!!
Half Iron distance participants will go out for 13 miles, make 2-15 mile loops, then return along the same route. There will be an aid station with bottle hand-ups and food as well as restrooms at the Fruit & Spice Park. Participants will pass this intersection at mile 13, mile 28 and mile 43 of the course.
Distance: 13.1 Miles - 1/2 Iron | 6.6 Miles - International
We've saved the best for last - the RUN! The first mile includes paved road and some hard packed dirt road that takes you through the back gate into Zoo Miami where you will run by various zoo animal exhibits.
At that point the run course goes down and back the beautiful palm tree lined Zoo Miami main entrance, then re-enters the Zoo at about the 4 mile mark for more animal exhibits. The run then goes through non-public areas of the zoo to another back entrance to Larry and Penny Park and from that point back to the finish area.
The run course in the zoo changes yearly based on construction, breeding programs, and zoo attendance. PLEASE BE COURTEOUS TO ZOO PATRONS who are sharing the zoo with us. They did not come to the zoo expecting to see humans running, so please don't drop an F bomb if someone's kid gets in your way. Just enjoy the zoo and have a GREAT TIME! That's what it is all about.
International distance participants will do one loop and Half Iron distance participants will do two loops. The run course was voted the best part of the event by last year's participants.
