The 1.2 mile swim course will take place at the Nimbus Dam which is fed by the American River with headwaters high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. This is one of the cleanest bodies of water available for any triathlon swim in California and is calm and flat in all weather conditions. The single-loop point-to-point 56 mile bike course offers glimpses of the Sierra Nevada Mountains while traversing farmland, vineyards, wooded hills, and the historic Mather Field air force base. The course has an overall elevation gain of 1200 feet.  The 13.1 mile flat run course on city streets and trails starts and finishes in downtown Rancho Cordova.

Located 12 miles east of the California’s state capitol, Sacramento, Rancho Cordova and surrounding communities are rich in the history of California’s Gold Rush including the first 12 miles of railroad in California. In more modern times the City hosted a thriving military base and now is home to large aerospace, technology, healthcare and other corporations.

As well as the half distance triathlon for individual and professional triathletes, Challenge Rancho Cordova will feature the relay team category, allowing friends and family to race together. The relay teams also make long distance triathlon more accessible to a wider range of athletes, allowing them to be a part of the unique long distance triathlon atmosphere at a more manageable level. It also illustrates Challenge Family’s commitment to the future of the sport, acting as building block as participants build from one to all three disciplines over time.

COURSES

Categories: Individual, Aquabike, Relay Team (2 or 3 members)

Swim Course (Nimbus Flat State Park):

Your 1.2 mile swim will start in deep water and traverse a counter clockwise course in  beautiful, calm fresh water from the Sierra Nevada Mountains. October water temperatures range from 61-65 degrees.

There is no doubt your swim will occur in one of the Cleanest Bodies of Water for any triathlon in California.  Nimbus Dam is fed by the American River and played an important role in the area’s history as gold was first discovered along its banks in 1848 igniting the California Gold Rush. The American River begins with headwaters high in the Sierra Nevada’s.

As it flows toward the ocean, the American River  passes through the Nimbus Fish Hatchery (Salmon, Steelhead and Trout) through Rancho Cordova to the Sacramento River and, ultimately, into San Francisco Bay. Today the riches of the American River are its ability to both excite and relax those who enjoy the waterway. Every year, thousands of visitors come to enjoy white water rafting, kayaking, and stroll along the scenic views from the trails that wind along the river.
