There are few metro area triathlons of this distance. In addition to providing a venue for the athletes, this event will showcase Montauk at a time when the weather is still nice but the summer crowds are not as heavy.
Swim is an out and back in Fort Pond. This is a fresh water swim with temperatures in the mid to upper 60's. Wetsuits are recommended, but not mandatory.
NOTE: The Half Iron swim course starts to the right of the swim exit that merges into the same finish as the Olympic swim. The two courses are separate and there will be no confusion for the athletes.
BIKE- 56 Miles |
The scenic bike course is two 28 mile laps with rolling hills and beautiful ocean and bay views. It has 2200 feet of total elevation gain.
NOTE: The Olympic distance race is running simultaneous to the Half Iron Distance race and the Olympic bike course is one lap of the Half Iron Distance course with the exception of skipping two out and backs on the return of the loop. These out and backs will be marked and staffed.
BIKE FUEL STATION
There will be one aid station (water and Heed and Heed Energy Gels) at approx. mile 28.
BIKE SUPPORT
PRE-RACE:
All athletes are responsible for their own bike.
No outside support is allowed as per USAT rules.
There will be limited bike service (assistance fixing flats, and make a pump available) in front of the main tent from 5:00 - -6:00 a.m.
DURING BIKE SEGMENT
There will be two vehicles roving the bike course to assist with any bike problems. Due to the distance of one loop on the bike course being 28 miles, an athlete may have to wait a short or a long time for assistance. Athletes with on-course bike mechanical problems should attempt to get to the nearest staff person to have them contact support to let them know where they are. This is known as "neutral" support and is the only support allowed on the course. Please be aware that NO other support vehicles are allowed on the course. Athletes may NOT provide their own support vehicles (cars, motorcycles, joggers or bikes). Outside assistance jeopardizes the safety of athletes and is grounds for penalty. Please help staff keep the event safe by spreading the word to family, friends and spectators that they should stay at the race site for viewing and cheering and if they wish to workout by running or biking, they should run in town, and/or west on Montauk Highway to ensure they do not interfere with the race. Thank you for your understanding.
Bikes allowed: Road bike, time trial, mountain bike or hybrid. (Sorry, no tandem or recumbent bikes!)
RUN - 13.1 Miles |
The run is two laps on a challenging hilly 6.55 mile course with 806 feet of total elevation gain. The two lap course is quite challenging; after a rolling 3 miles, you hit "Murder Hill" followed by two other challenging climbs and the "Pits", a great accomplishment for your race season!
NOTE: The Olympic run course is exactly the same as one lap of the Half Iron Distance course with omitting one small section that will be well marked and staffed during the race making it simple for the athletes to do the correct course.
