Other : Ski 2 - 17.5K Courses |
The Valdez Qaniq (Alutiiq for “falling snow”) Challenge is scheduled to take place in Valdez, Alaska on January 17-18, 2015 during the Martin Luther King 3-day weekend. This 2-day/35K cross country ski race will combine both classic and freestyle skiing on two separate courses with a combined purse of $10,000 divided among the top 3 men & women finishers.
Early registration will run from October 1 - December 5, 2014, and will be on a “first come-first reserved” basis for the first 400 skiers. The $100 registration fee includes: race bib, dri-fit T-shirt, and awards dinner. (The registration fee after December 5, 2014 is $125. We cannot guarantee a T-shirt in your size, if registering after December 5.)
A lottery-style drawing will commence on Friday morning, January 16 to establish which trails – either Mineral Creek or Out-of-Town - each skier will compete on during day 1. Skiers will simply swap trails on day 2 and the total overall time will establish our winners.
This race will take place – regardless of ski conditions, cancelled flights or other Valdez Winter challenges – hence the name! Be prepared to ski in all conditions as the possibility of white-outs, open water crossings and/or blinding sun may exist. As a result, no refunds or registration “swaps” will be allowed – please plan accordingly… remember, getting here is ½ the fun!Skiers will race Classic style on the 17.5K "in town" trails in the majestic Mineral Creek Valley and will race Freestyle on the 17.5K "out of town" trails that encompass the picturesque Valdez Glacier Valley.
Mineral Creek Canyon - In Town Classic Race - Start and Finish line will be at the end of Mineral Creek Drive near the Coast Guard Housing Complex
