Hilo Olympic Distance Triathlon : |
Triathlon : Swim 1500 Meters, Bike 24.9 Miles, Run 6.2 Miles |
This years' 2nd annual Hilo Triathlon takes place in the same beautiful place just South of Hilo as last year. Cooler temperatures on the East side of the Big Island make this an enjoyable event for everyone. You can expect temperatures from 70 degrees to the low 80's. The epic ocean swim course is improved this year with more buoys, a flashing strobe light beacon has been added to bring you home, and the entire 1500 meters will be lined with a floating polypropylene rope that will make it easier to stay on course, ecspecially for "pool swimmers."
The fast out and back 24.8 mile bike course has a gradual elevation gain of 520' at the halfway turn-a-round. THis makes for a fast down hill return to get your legs ready for the run. Coastal views or waterfalls can be seen through out the entire bike course.
The 6.2 mile run heads out to King's Landing, just past the famous Richardson's Beach park. Along the way, you will pass several other ocean front beaches while having an elevation change less than 25 feet (so basically, a flat run course).
Those guests wishing to stay close to the race, can make their Hotel reservations at the Hilo Hawaiian, the highest rated oceanfront hotel in Hilo. To take advantage of $130-$150 / night rooms. Use group code HH509 when calling 808-935-9361 or 808-961-9642. The Hilo Hawaiian Hotel is only 2 miles from the race start.
This is an Olympic Distance course. 1.5k swim - 40k bike - 10k run

USAT rules will be followed for this event and it is advised to look them up prior to race day online. Most of the rules pertain to unsportmanlike conduct and rules on the bike: such as no drafting and blocking penalties. Triathlon is an individual sport. It is also noted that any form of music with or without ear plugs is prohibited as you will not be able to hear marshals and motor vehicles. Hawaii has many electric cars on the island which make very little sound and can not be heard if you are wearing an ipod.
