The 4th annual Dig the Du is once again proudly benefiting Open Doors of Asheville, a nonprofit connecting local children living in poverty with an active, individualized network of support. New for 2014 Updated Bike Courses and enhanced Kids Du 2 Race! The Kids Du 2 Race is proud to partner with the Carolina Kid's MultiSport Series and is race #5 in the series!

Also known as, “WNC’s dirty duathlon” because it takes place on private, undisturbed land, Dig the Du is not only a good introduction to off-road, multi-sport events, it is also a great venue for seasoned athletes. Participants can register as an individual or as part of a two or three person relay team. The race consists of a 2.5-mile run through grassy fields and forest service roads, a 12-mile off-road bike course, followed by another 2.5-mile trail run.

When athletes participate in this race, they are not only competing for handcrafted awards and special ‘sprint’ prizes, they are also contributing to OpenDoors’ Llewellyn Perry Scholarship Fund. Bo, Carol, Lane and Jim Perry donate the use of Sky Valley Farms for Dig the Du, and are long-time supporters of local youth organizations. The scholarship fund, named for the Perrys’ late grandmother “Lew”, helps pay tuition and tutoring expenses for underprivileged children in the OpenDoors program.

Special race features include: specially designed race tees, congestion-free start area, individual & team registration, bike rentals (by Sycamore Cycles), unique & private trails, handcrafted awards, and incredible post-race food and Sierra Nevada beer! It’s the perfect event for multi-sport athletes, trail runners, and mountain bikers alike. Mark your calendars, and register now, for Sunday, October 12th, 10:30 am, for the 4th annual “Dig the Du” race.

We have created the Kids Du 2 this year so that younger ones can experience multi sport racing without the danger of seasoned adult sized athletes on the course, and learn to have fun competing in our beautiful mountains! There will be fun takeaways for kids and food for racers.

Trips for kids will be partnering with us to provide bikes for OpenDoors kids the day of and we are currently solidifying the location for a bike drive in with support of Asheville on Bikes and Trips for kids. Course Information:

Racers will blast off with a 2.5 mile trail run, transition into a chain-rattling, off-road 12 mile cycle which, new for 2014, offers an enhanced bike course experience with newly added single track sections, and finally run against the same 2.5 mile trail, only this time reversed—with 14.5 miles under the belt—the last stretch will be ten feet taller and breathing fire. The event is on private property, never before open to the public for any other events.

The off-road duathlon is not only a good introduction to off-road, multi-sport events but it is also a great venue for seasoned athletes. Register as an individual or part of a two or three person relay team. The twin 2.5 mile trail courses weave through beautiful single-track, grassy fields and rugged forest service roads, while the 12 mile off-road bike course descends steadily down scaly forest service roads, which on the return, quickly become a challenging charge back over the spine of the mountain.
