Smolts are juvenile salmon heading out to sea.

The Downeast Salmon Federation will be putting on the 2nd Annual Smolt Bolt and Bloater Bash on Saturday, May 17th. This 4-miler is a trail race paired with a smoked alewife celebration. The race will start at the Machias dike and follow the Downeast Sunrise Trail to the East Machias Aquatic Research Center, where we will be smoking whole alewives (bloaters) at the awards ceremony. All proceeds go to help DSF finish the renovations on our building to help meet the needs of our organization. The Atlantic salmon hatchery will be in full operation and open to visitors for tours.

Parking is at the FINISH LINE in East Machias and there will be a shuttle provided to the starting line in Machias.

Registration is $15 until May 9th, and $20 after that.

Course Information:

This run goes along the flat, wide Down East Sunrise Trail. Most of the trail is along the Machias and East Machias Rivers and the tidal flats of Machias Bay. There are beautiful views of blueberry barrens and woods, and roads can't be seen from most of the course. The Sunrise Trail is a multi-use trail that is also open to cyclists and ATV users, but other users must (and do!) yield to runners. The surface is packed dirt, and there are often loose stones.

Parking is located in East Machias, and a shuttle will be provided to the starting line on the Machias dike.

Directions:

The East Machias Aquatic Research Center is located at 13 Willow Street, East Machias, ME 04630. It is the only building in East Machias with solar panels and a windmill out front. Please park in the Archibald's One-Stop Gulf station parking lot.

Other Info:

Following the Smolt Bolt, we will be hosting the Bloater Bash. Prepare to stick around and enjoy whole smoked alewives with the awards ceremony.
