Detroit Central City is hosting its 3rd annual 5K Run for Literacy with a 3.1 mile course winding through Milliken State Park and up and down the Dequindre Cut Greenway. Or participants may walk a mile along the Detroit RiverWalk. This fundraiser raises awareness of the importance of adult literacy and supports enhancing writing, reading, math and computer skills. Proceeds employ certified peer tutors to assist students to reach self sufficiency or be successful in obtaining a GED.

DOE registration 8 a.m., Kiddie Runs at 9:30 a.m., 5K and 1 Mile walk at 10 a.m., Award Ceremony at 11 a.m.

What about kids?  Kids 12 and under on race day are FREE but must be accompanied by a registered parent or guardian. All kids may participate in the free Kiddie runs beginning at 9:30 a.m. Prizes will be given in different age categories. Please indicate t-shirt size on registration form and parents must sign the waiver form for each child.

What about hand cyclists/wheelchairs?  Disabled participants may compete in the timed 5K event.  Please contact the Race Director in advance so accommodations can be made (313-833-4610).

What about pets & strollers?  Strollers and dogs on leashes are permitted in the Run for Literacy but these racers are asked to line up with the walkers (behind the competitive runners) and clean up after their pets on the course. 

Are there awards?  Awards will be given to the top three male and top three female runners. Medals will be awarded to the top men/women runners in nine age groups, plus there will be a wheelchair award. All walkers and runners receive a participant award.

What are the age groups for the timed event?  Separate men and women categories: 14 and under, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, 80 and over, plus a wheelchair award

Day of Run:

Parking: Please refer to the Course Map on the run webpage. Event address is 1340 Atwater St., Detroit, MI. There are two specified parking lots. The Rivard Plaza lot is free (holds approx. 130 vehicles). The GM lot is $3. There will be signage.

Registration:  Proceed to the Registration Tent to register. If you registered online, and signed a Release of Liability, there will be signage telling you where to pick up your Race Number. There will be a coupon on the bottom of the Race Number to tear off and get your FREE t-shirt.

Fees: Day of Run registration fee is $25. Cash or check only. Register thru PayPal online thru April 24th for $20. Be sure to print the registration form and either e-mail [email protected], fax to 313-831-2604 or mail to Detroit Central City Community Mental Health, 10 Peterboro, Detroit, MI 48201. Or if you pay near the cut-off date, print and bring the registration form with you.

Times:  Will be displayed on the large digital clock at the Finish line. Complete results will be available on www.runmichigan.com. And well boast about the results on our After the Run website, in the next online newsletter and all email blasts!
