The Cotes du Run course, located at Rocky Waters Vineyard & Winery in Hanover, IL, is a unique trail. Its location in the northwest of Illinois near the steep hills and twisting valleys of the Mississippi offers rugged, yet scenic terrain. Although the natural beauty of this partly-wooded/partly-open meadow course is spectacular, serious athletes will be challenged by the punishing ascents and descents. Recreational runners are welcome, and many can and do finish the race, but be warned this is a difficult run. The course starts out with a gently rolling stretch of grassy path, then gradually slopes down and turns sharply into an area of open meadow interspersed with thickets and groves of woodland. Runners wind alongside the vineyards and the occasional pond. There is a small stretch of gravel road, but most of the course is a cut-grass path. There are several steep ascents and descents along the way, with the last quarter-mile to the finish line being a precipitous climb up the aptly named Heartbreak Hill. Runners who are striving for optimal times would benefit from running cleats. Everyone else should bring their sense of adventure and their cameras.
