New Historical Course for 2014!
This years course will take the runners to the site of the Wright Brothers Seaplane experiments from 1911-1914. After a half mile on the bikeway, runners will turn on Elter Drive, name for the J. Elter farm, where the Wright brothers kept their seaplanes and conducted their test on the adjacent Great Miami River. The runners will then loop around the Moraine Airfield, which sits on the former farm site, and will house a museum dedicated to the seaplane in the near future. Run on the grounds where the Wright brothers actually worked on their protype seaplanes.
On your way back to the Payne, look around at the residential neighborhood called Miami Shores. This eclectic and sometimes whimsical collection of small cottages and houses sprung up during World War Two, as workers migrated from the south to the Dayton area, to take the many factory jobs which bolstered the war effort. These worker were true "do it yourselfers" and their creativity is evident in the variety of styles and building materials used to construct the dwellings.
Once back at the Payne, be sure to check out the Wright Seaplane display in the lobby. Course Map Run Course Map |
Directions: From I-75 take Exit 47 towards Moraine/Kettering. Bear left on OH-741/Springboro Pike. After .2 miles turn left on Main St/Sellars Rd. Go 1.4 miles and turn left into Payne Recreation Center parking.
