2014 Steamboat Lake Sprint Triathlon:
The 2nd stop on the Colorado Triathlon Tour takes us to a picturesque venue that was the hot event of 2013. Steamboat Lake State Park has it all; a swim in the crystal clear waters of Steamboat Lake, a scenic ride through the rolling country side, and a run that takes athletes on the roads and trails of the park.
With amazing views of Hahn's Peak and the surrounding scenery this is one sprint you won't want to miss! Camp 200m from transition or stay at one of the surrounding bed and breakfasts; Steamboat Lake is the mid-Summer getaway you've been looking for.
The Steamboat Lake Sprint is exactly half the distance of the Steamboat Olympic Distance Triathlon that will take place on Aug 17th at Lake Catamount. Whether you're competing in your first ever race, prepping for the Aug 17th Steamboat Triathlon, or earning coveted Colorado Tri Tour points this is the perfect event.
Race is capped at 350 athletes and sold out the past two seasons.
STEAMBOAT LAKE SPRINT BIKE COURSE (12.4 Miles): The bike course will take participants on a rolling out and back course! Upon exiting Steamboat Lake State Park the riders will take a right on CO 62 and face the highest climb on the course. At the top of the climb riders will head down hill and take a right on CO 129. Once on CO 129 the views of the surrounding country side are truly breathtaking.
While traveling on CO 129 riders will pass Hahns Peak Village, a few wildflower meadows, and might even see an Elk grazing on the side of the road before hitting the turn-around. As athletes aproach the turn-around they'll face a slight downhill before hitting the turn-around and beginning the journey back to the transition area. The roads will be open to traffic, but you're more likely to pass by a bear coming out of Route National Forest than be passed by a car!
STEAMBOAT LAKE SPRINT RUN COURSE (3.5 Miles):After the bike ride you'll slip on your run shoes for quick 3.5m loop that will take you on a mix of the rolling road and trail system within the park! You'll exit transition the same way you exited on the bike and proceed down County Road 129. Just before the 1.5 mile mark you'll take a right down the dirt road before the visitor center and hop on the Willow Creek Trail. Follow the scenic Willow Creek Trail all the way back to the Marina parking lot where you'll sprint to the finish! After you cool off, please enjoy the post race activities at the swim beach; music, food, raffles, and awards! The course will have aid stations at miles .75 (Top of first hill) and mile 2.25 with water and Clif Shot Drink!
