What is Swim to the Moon? A 10k and 5k open-water swim through the Hiland Chain of Lakes near Hell, Michigan.
The 5k will start at the old University of Michigan Fresh Air Camp on the west shore of Patterson Lake, site of soon-to-be North Star Reach, a camp for children with life-threatening illnesses. The 5k will swim south and east through the heavily forested Pinckney Recreation Area, passing through five lakes along the way. Scattered cottages are the only signs of civilization.
The 10k race starts at Halfmoon Lake Beach and participants will swim to the start of the 5k, where special needs bags will be available, then turn around and go back.

- 10k: The 10k swim course will start at Halfmoon Lake beach, keeping the buoys on the left all the way to Patterson Lake reaching NorthStar Reach camp. At NorthStar Reach the 10k swimmers will exit the water, receive their special needs bag and return to swimming again keeping the buoys on their left to Halfmoon Lake Beach for the finish.
- 5k: The 5k swim course will begin at Patterson Lake on the beach of NorthStar Reach camp,
keeping the buoys on the left all the way to Halfmoon Lake beach for the finish. - 1.2 mile: Starts at Halfmoon Lake Beach -loop course in Halfmoon Lake
