Triathlon : Swim 750 Meters, Mountain Bike 9.3 Miles, Trail Run 3.1 Miles |
XTERRA is headed back to Oak Mountain State Park in Bama and its just $75 for the Southeast Championship from now until Feb. 15.
As far as arenas go, it just doesnt get any better. Year-after-year everyone says this is the best course on the entire circuit. Its sweet technical, twisting, forested single track that gets maintained year-round by the old school mountain bikers at BUMP.
The big race is a 1-mile swim, 20-mile mountain bike, and 6-mile trail run. It gives out qualifying spots to the XTERRA World Championship, big points for amateurs chasing regional jerseys, and all the big name elites come because its part of the Pro Series.
Theres a half-distance course too, plus relay team options, and new this year are a set of 5km and 10km Mud runs along with the epic off-road half-marathon.
And dont forget about the southern hospitality found in Shelby County which is for real!
The course at Oak Mountain State Park in Shelby County, located in the southernmost part of the Appalachian Chain, is praised by competitors as being one of the most fun, fast, scenic and difficult on the XTERRA schedule.
It starts with a swim in the warm water of Double Oak Lake - two 750-meter laps separated by a short beach shuffle in-between.
From there the long, single-loop mountain bike course starts at about 500 feet elevation, twists, turns and rolls through the forest for seven miles the begins a gradual 700-foot climb to the summit. The descent is a fast, wild ride highlighted by the notorious "blood rock" section - a series of tricky to maneuver, uneven and jagged rocks.
The run is simply punishing, with four major climbs - each progressively steeper than the one before. In between the climbs are a series of weaving off-road trails that meander through forested sections that provide shade, if not relief, from the heat.
Hotels closest to the Park Entrance are at exit 246 off Interstate 65 for route 119.
Oak Mountain State Park:

There are hundreds of campsites and cabins for rent, and the park is just a half-hour south of the historic and bustling city of Birmingham.
