Description:

2013 :Timberman 70.3

• The IRONMAN 70.3 Timberman triathlon was first brought to Gilford, New Hampshire on beautiful Lake Winnipesaukee in 2000, as a way to bring something healthy to the community.  The first year, the event had 600 people between the sprint and the 70.3 event.  Now almost 12 years later the sprint distance race has grown into a 1,400 person event and the IRONMAN 70.3 boasts 2,000 plus triathletes.

One of the things that sets the IRONMAN 70.3 Timberman apart is the festival-like atmosphere at Lake Winnipesaukee.  Whether you find yourself camping for race weekend, hiking, swimming or just enjoying zip lining at Gunstock Mountain, there is something for everyone, from race participants to volunteers and spectators.

Timberman 70.3 in New Hampshire is a great race. It was my first half Iron and maybe I should have considered something a little less challenging in hill department, but still, it was a great race that I finished with enthusiasm! The swim is beautiful. Lake Winnepesaukee is very clear and the temps were decent (I wore a wet suit and felt great). There was a little bit of tumultion from boats and wind as the lake is very large, so that was a bit of an issue for me, but once I relaxed and got into my stroke, I was fine. The bike is very hilly, VERY hilly the first and last 11 miles, so much so that I saw people jumping off their bikes and walking up the hills - the middle is rolling hills so you never really get away from the hills, which was tough for me as I trained on mostly flat grounds. The run is awesome, it's an out and back 6.3 mile loop, which breaks it up and made it a little easier for me mentally - although passing through the finisher's chute when I still have another 6 miles to run was tough. It was minimally hilly, but the views were great. The staff and volunteers along the course were AMAZING. The town really gets into it, and they were really great for support especially during the run! Overall this was a great race. I would do it again but would be sure to train on more hills beforehand. The hills on the bike really killed my quads! Post-race food could have been better, and no beer? What's up with that!? Overall a great race. :-)
