The Vmps Open Water Swim Clinic is designed to help swimmers of all levels become more confident and effective during the swim segment of a triathlon. Participants spend the majority of the clinic in the lake practicing the skills needed in open water swimming. Fearful beginners work on learning how to relax and breathe while swimming in a lake. Intermediate and advanced swimmers work on skills like sighting and drafting which will help them to navigate the swim course in a triathlon more quickly. All this is done under the watchful eyes of experienced coaches and life guards.

After a warm up swim, the coaches divide the class into smaller groups based on ability. They cover most of the topics in the small group format while swimming in the lake, and then reconvene into a larger group to practice triathlon swim starts, swimming in a crowd, and drafting.

Topics Covered

  • Triathlon swim starts
  • Dealing with anxiety during the swim
  • Bilateral breathing
  • Sighting
  • Swimming straight in the open water
  • Swimming with a crowd
  • Drafting
  • Turning at buoys
  • Exiting the water

Course Information:

Minimum Swim Ability

If you want to participate in a Vmps Open Water Swim Clinic, you should be able to swim at least 100 yards (up and back twice in a standard lap swimming pool) without touching down. You dont need to go fast or do the freestyle stroke the entire distance, but you do need this basic level of fitness and swim ability to get the most benefit from the clinic. Note: the coaches do not work on swim stroke form during this clinic other than how it is related to open water swimming. Vmps offers a number of other swimming services to help people with their swim stroke form or to help them with swim fitness.

Praise About Our OWS Clinics

That was an incredible experience this morning. I totally freaked out at the beginning - but through your training and positive encouragement I feel better about getting into the dark water in the wetsuit.  I will be heading back to Chauncy to get more experience in the water. Thanks again...you are an excellent coach....Marcia

I just wanted to thank you for hosting the swim clinic down in Lakeville Ma a couple weeks ago.  I did the sprint tri and this was the first race in 8 years where I didn't panic in the water.  I went in and did what I was supposed to do without a worry.  You were a huge help!  Thanks again!....Matt

Thank you for a wonderful open water swim clinic yesterday.  That was EXACTLY what I needed!  It gave me time to get use to the wet suit, learn some swim techniques and most especially acclimate to the lake.  I usually swim at the Y in the morning, so this is obviously different from lap swim.

When Tracy started to work with us she told us why we did the warm-up swim.  Everything she said was right on the money.  When I started my warm-up, my brain was on sensory overload.  I was trying to process the feel of the wetsuit, the smell and taste of the water, the color of the water, and then finally find my way around the orange markers on the lake.  If I hadn't gotten that out of the way yesterday, I'd be facing it next week at the start of the triathlon.  Yikes!

So needless to say your swim clinic was well worth $35!  In the end, I felt energized and excited to go back in BEFORE the race. Thank you, thank you, thank you!  I will suggest the clinic to anyone who comes my way....Jen
