This event is offered to 12 years old and up. A YAKathon is similar to a Triathlon, but instead of the swimming leg, you will kayak. The kayak section will be a mile in length. The first wave that starts at 8:00 and the second wave at 8:30 are the competitive waves. The number of participants in each wave will be determined on how many of those participants bring their own kayaks. The number of kayaks rented is 50, so therefore the waves cannot exceed this limit for people not furnishing their own kayak. If you are bringing your own Kayak, please arrive 1 hour early to stage your boat. The kayak leg will be the 1st one. There will be a 1/2 mile run to get to the kayaks. Waves will only be added after existing ones fill up. There will not be separate trophies for the competitive wave and the regular waves. 10 year age groups and overall male female. There will only be Awards for each category, regardless of how many waves we have to add. The kayak will start and end at the same location. You will basically go around an entire lake. There will be plenty of safety personnel on the lake in other kayaks with flotation devices. The bike leg will be 2nd. The bikes will be staged near the race start line and you will have your own separate 8x8 area to stage your bike, drinks, food.. etc. You will leave on the bike and travel around the perimeter of the property through grassy trails, wooded trails, roadways and old orange groves. The length of the bike leg will be between 6 to 8 miles. There will be very little sand, but mostly grass and pine needles. There will not be anything extreme on the bike section. The course is Florida flat! It will be fun and will be a great workout. You must furnish your own bike. Bikes with wider tires will do better than skinny tires. You may be required to lift your bike over a fence or two. You will return your bike to the Transition area and start your run. The run will be 3 miles of woods, some pasture and some mild obstacles (no large Highlander obstacles). These obstacles will not be extreme nor will you need help to get through them. This race is not intended to be an obstacle mud race like the Highlander or Hot Pursuit, but there will be a few things that challenge you on the run section. All Teams must do the course together and cross the finish line together in order to qualify for Awards. This is our second Yakathon and we hope you come on out and give it a try. There is no separate kid's race at this event, but there will be things for them to play on in the vendor's section. We will have some awesome food and drinks as well as our energetic DJ cranking some tunes! Bring the family and make it a fun fitness day!
