Orienteering is finally coming to the Suncoast. The granddaddy of Adventure Race sports, orienteering involves using a map and compass to find a series of checkpoints called controls in as little time as possible. Special large scale multi-colored and accurate maps are provided to the participants. Participants supply or can rent their own compass.
Choose the course you want based on your own ability and experience. Choose your start time from 10 am to noon. After your race bring your own picnic and compare race experiences with your fellow 'orienteers'. Race hard or leisurely. It's up to you!
Orienteering events are great ways for Adventure Racers to learn and improve land navigation skills (without breaking the bank to do it).
Map Hike: 1.5 km - non-competitive walk with an orienteering map and a series of instructions about how to read the map, keep it oriented and use map details to navigate.
Novice (Yellow Course) 3.5 km - navigation mostly on trails relatively easy navigation.
Intermediate (Orange Course) 4 km - also mostly on trails but a bit more complex navigation.
Short Advanced (Green Course) 5 km - for those with some land navigation experience. Many times you will be leaving the trail to find your way through woods and prairies. Thickets and swamps will be avoided.
Long Advanced: (Red Course) 7-8 km - For the experts and the fit. Also off trail significant amounts of time but the thick, nasty stuff can be avoided.
