Looking for a NEW and challenging triathlon that is also close to home? You love the road, but want to test out that mountain bike that's been sitting in your garage?
The XTERRA Lory Triathlon features a 1/2 mile swim in the clear waters of Horsetooth Reservoir (Eltuk Bay), it's one of the most scenic swims in the state with canyon walls on both sides. Then it's on to a 2-Lap 12.2 mile single-track bike over rolling terrain, and across valley bridges at Lory State Park. Then you'll get to finish things off with a fun and challenging 4.8 mile (8k) run through the clouds on single-track trails! This is the perfect off-road tri for beginners to experts. The course is designed so that anyone can have fun and everyone will be challenged! Entries will be limited to 325 participants, and we sold out in 2011 on April 18th and 2012 on April 10th!
Swim: The triathlon course for the XTERRA Lory Triathlon will take place in Horsetooth Reservoir, offering breathtaking views of the canyon walls. Water temp ranges from 71-74 degrees.
Swim: The 1/2m swim course is an out and back shape, with the swimmers traveling in a counter clockwise direction. Participants exit the water and from the waters edge to the T/A will be CARPETED!!!
SWIM WAVES: You'll be ranked by swim and mountain bike ability to help group you will similar ability levels out on the course!
NEW for 2013: Wave 1 and 2 will start 10min earlier (7:50am and 7:57am) to allow additional time gaps in between waves
Bike: This bike course has a bit of everything! With the addition of XTERRA Curt Gowdy in June we'll be keeping the 2-loop XTERRA Lory course identical to 2012. We're starting the waves 10min earlier in 2012 (7:50am) to allow for extra time in between each wave, without extending the send off of the last wave. Get ready for some singletrack and more singletrack on this rolling and scenic course. Overall the bike is beginner friendly. Seasoned veterans don't despair, The fast flowing nature is sure to test your engine and high speed technical skills. Elites to First Timers all comment, "that was just fast and fun!"
Run: The 8K run is an epic loop with amazing views of Lory State Park and Horsetooth Reservoir. You leave transition to the north on windy singletrack then cross the main park road. Once onto the Timber Trail the race heads towards the clouds for a 1.75m switchback ascent. At the top take a minute to breath and look around, we promise your jaw will drop! .5 mile of flat, then a screaming descent down Kimmons, followed by a flat last mile on the West Valley Trail. Once you cross back over the road and shoot into Soldier Canyon you're almost there. Don't slow down though because you're going to need a full head of steam for the double lane Slip n' Slide. The best finish line in the sport, just remember to stay low and fast!
