Race Venue

George Wyth State Park is located on Highway 218 within the Waterloo-Cedar Falls metropolitan area in Northeast Iowa. Take Highway 218 Exit 185 and follow signs into the park. Parking will be clearly marked; please do not park in the grass. Check in, transition area, and race start will take place at George Wyth Lake.

 

Race Categories

 Age Group- This category is open to all participants.  Racers will be divided into categories by gender and age.  Age groups are: 19 and under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70 and older.

Clydesdale and Athena Divisions - Men weighing 220 pounds or more and women weighing 165 or more are able, but not required, to participate in the Clydesdale and Athena divisions. To do so, you must indicate this group on your registration form. Entrants in this category are eligible for Clydesdale or Athena Division awards, but not age group awards. *Please note that these weight requirements are different from previous years.

 

Teams - Two or three person relay teams (male, female, and coed) are welcome at the Accel Triathlon. Each team member must register individually and pick up his/her own race packet. Relay team members will share a timing chip. The swim team member will hand off the chip to the bike member inside the Transition Area. Returning bikers must rack their bike before handing the chip to the runner. All hand offs must occur in the Transition Area.

 

Course Information:

Swim:
Out-and-back swim that enters and exits the water on a boat ramp. Distances are a 1500m swim in the Olympic distance and 500m swim in the Sprint distance. Water quality in George Wyth Lake will be tested for safety several times in the months and weeks leading up to the race. If water quality is deemed to be unsafe for race day, the event will be a run-bike-run duathlon. Athletes will be notified of any changes as soon as possible after determination is made.

Bike:
A loop on scenic rural roads.  Distances are 40K in the Olympic distance and 15.8 miles in the Sprint distance.  The course includes turns, curves, train crossings, and will be open to traffic. Areas requiring greater caution will be staffed by police personnel and/or volunteers. An aid station will be located mid-way through the course.

Run:
Out-and-back route on a park road and paved trail through scenic George Wyth State Park.  Distances are 10K in the Olympic distance and 3 miles in the Sprint distance.  The park road portion of the course will be open to vehicle traffic. The trail portion is flat, wooded, and open to recreational traffic. There will be a nuber of aid stations along the course with water and sports drink.
