Description

Get Ready to Run!

A complete guide to training for a half or full marathon in sixteen weeks, this book follows the format of Tom's previous book The 12-Week Triathlete with simply the best advice on how to run your fastest race while staying injury-free. Whether you are a first-time marathoner, trying to set a new "PR" or looking to qualify for Boston, this book is for you.

"TRAIN LESS AND RUN YOUR BEST"

Some worry that running a marathon will involve hours upon hours of training each week. Others fear that they will become injured. Some veteran marathoners have followed other training plans and experienced both, but Tom's approach is much different. His philosophy of "train less, run your best" will amaze you whether you are running your first marathon or fiftieth. Exercise physiologist and sports performance coach Tom Holland -- an elite endurance athlete himself and sub-3 hour marathoner who has run in more than fifty marathons, three ultramarathons, and a dozen Ironman triathlons around the world will teach you how to properly gear up and train in the sixteen weeks prior to your half or full marathon. So when that starting gun sounds, you'll be equipped with invaluable tips and techniques that will put you in position to run the best race of your life.

The Marathon Method provides you with everything you need to know including:

  • Easy-to-understand advice on nutrition, hydration, and gear
  • Customized training plans for beginner, intermediate, and advanced runners
  • Advice on the mental side of running and how to make your mind go that extra mile
  • Strategies to avoid hitting the infamous 'wall'
  • Tips on pacing, injury prevention, strength training, flexibility, and much more!

Customer reviews for 'The Marathon Method: The 16-Week Training Program that Prepares You to Finish a Full or Half Marathon in Your Best Time'

«Great for new and experienced runners»

Really great book, very informative for new and experienced runners. Everyone can get something out of reading it. I really enjoyed hearing the stories of some of the races Tom Holland had participated in. For myself, I'm not a beginner runner, but I'm by no means an 'experienced' marathon/half-marathon runner. I was inspired to buy it after what I believe to be a less than stellar performance at the Hartford Marathon, my second marathon. I identified several siginificant errors in my training, tapering and racing strategy. I'm looking forward to doing much better next year thanks in part to the insights gleaned from this book.

«Cut my time by 21 minutes!»

I purchased The Marathon Method because I had heard that Tom Holland's advice goes beyond simple running programs to include nutrition, strength training and everything you need to know to prep for a marathon. I hadn't run a marathon in ten years, but Tom's methods allowed me to fit training into a busy schedule, build my strength, fitness and endurance, and best of all, complete the New York City marathon without stopping and 21 minutes faster than the Marine Corps marathon, which I had run when I was ten years younger!

Tom's beginner plan definitely gave me everything I needed to be successful and have fun. I highly recommend it and will use it again!

«Amazing book for all levels of runners!»

I used The Marathon Method to train for both my first half-marathon, and more recently, the New York City marathon. Tom's book covers EVERYTHING you need to know in a relatable, understandable and easy-to-read format. Based on his vast experiences, as well as documented research, Tom clearly guides you through not only the training you will need to run your best race, but also all of the ancillary and logistical details to help you feel well prepared for any race. Most importantly, he focuses on getting you to the starting line injury free by using a conservative approach which can be tailored to your own running level or experience. I also liked the fact that the training program can fit into a busy schedule as I am a mom of three older kids. Combining four days of running with weight training on the off days also allowed me to keep up other activities I'm involved in (tennis, walking the dogs, etc.) without feeling like I was overtraining. By using the Marathon Method, I successfully completed the marathon with no injuries, no pain, no stopping and a smile on my face the entire time. I highly recommend this book!
