Description: How It All Started

Coach Ed has trained and advised triathletes for almost 10 years as part of a local triathlon club and Team in Training. In the summer of 2005, Team Z began when twenty-three of Ed's team members from various Team in Training events requested that Ed form a team of his own, predicated upon Ed's ability to motivate his team members to achieve beyond the unthinkable while creating a true team environment. The request was one that Coach had heard many times during his years as the head coach of triathlon programs for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training Program, National Capital Area Chapter. After being introduced to the multi-sport community and completing their first triathlon, under the encouraging eye of Coach Ed, these athletes often wanted to know "what's next?" Finally, during the summer of 2005, the athletes and Coach Ed formulated what would be the basis of a fast-growing, tightly knit community of athletes training, racing, and socializing together with a focus towards achieving common group goals. The team has since grown to almost 400 members.

Focus on a Healthy Lifestyle

What the group envisioned differentiates us from any group or individual training program that we could think of. One of the most unique and desirable aspects of our program is that it does not have an end. We train with a focus of having fun, building a sense of community, and a desire to enhance our lives as a group through adoption of a healthy lifestyle. With the focus on a lifestyle rather than a single race, our members met collectively after the inaugural Fall 2005 season, to establish the group goals and race calendar for the entire 2006 season. We will continue to train as a team for a wide range of events and races that are prioritized to meet group-defined goals on an annual basis. We develop multiple paths through the season that allow each athlete to align themselves with a detailed program that meets their individual ambitions, all the while ensuring they have the support and encouragement of the larger group at weekly training, racing, and social events.

A True Team Environment

In other words, Team Z'ers truly own their destiny within the team, and Coach Ed provides the means to achieve the destiny. What this community of athletes has achieved is phenomenal. By definition, triathlon is an individual sport and a time trial where each athlete is tested against the course and the clock. What all of the Team Z athletes have accomplished, each in their own unique way, is to turn an individual sport into a true TEAM ENVIRONMENT.
